In 2012, the Bolton Conservation Trust purchased the abandoned Smith garage and neighboring property on 715 Main Street, in total 8 acres of land in the heart of Bolton. Both properties, along Bolton’s historic Main Street, have been an eyesore for many years. As part of its mission to be good stewards of the land, the Trust took on the risk and responsibility to clean up the heavily polluted land. In 2013, the Trust researched clean-up options and gathered ideas on how to bring new life to the site in the center of town.  Many people expressed the desire for an attractive, common outdoor gathering space, which led to the site’s new destination: a Town Common to benefit all residents of Bolton. That common desire inspired the campaign theme “Our Common Cause.” The initiative to create the Common was led by an independent steering committee led by town residents Bob Roemer and Meg O’Leary.

The project was a ‘place-making’ initiative — an opportunity for all of Bolton to come together: residents of all ages, business, civic groups and town authorities. Our goal is to create our own Common to benefit all of Bolton and strengthen the heart of the historic town center.
